The Forerunning Biotechnological Innovator Against Cancer

Professor Han-Chung Wu, currently serving two key roles as a Distinguished Research Fellow in the Institute of Celluar and Orgasmic Biology (Academia Sinica) and as the Director of the Biomedical Translation Research Center (Academia Sinica), leads a team committed to developing innovative therapies against cancer and infectious diseases. Their outstanding academic achievements have made them on a par with the world’s top research institutions as they continue to extend the impact of Taiwan’s biotechnology industry within the global community.

As a country especially dedicated to developing and advancing biotechnology industry, Taiwan is one of the few countries in the world that has the technology and know-how to research, develop, and manufacture new medicine. Prof. Wu, who had to pass by the oncology ward on a daily basis during his tenure as a professor in the College of Medicine, National Taiwan University, became deeply affected by the patients who were suffering from their cancer illness. He aspired to devote himself to the research and development of innovative cancer therapies. This was behind his driving force to develop an innovative targeted drug delivery system and new antibody drugs—a massive breakthrough on cancer treatment which benefits humanity.

Prof. Wu’s compassion towards the ill and infirm was seeded during his undergraduate years in NCKU, where he was immersed in the deeply humanistic culture of the university. Influenced by his warm and earnest teachers and peers, Prof. Wu grew to become a person of positive and compassionate temperament who has not only taken the well-being of humanity close to his heart, but has even taken actions to change the world through his medical researches for the betterment.

From the Laboratory to Applicable Treatment

Prof. Wu’s keen interest in biomedicine began since his youth, which has driven him to enroll in the recently established Department of Biology at NCKU. Only in its 3rd year, the Department of Biology was riding on the new wave of Taiwan’s rising biotechnology industry. The faculty and teachers were all outstanding scholars who had returned from overseas with the latest scholarship and internationally vetted curricula. In his senior year, Prof. Wu became a member of the laboratory of his mentor, Prof. Hua-Lin Wu, where he would devote himself to the research of plasmin. In order to obtain specimens, Wu would often leave his house just before sunrise to collect pig blood fresh from the slaughterhouse, which he would bring straight to the laboratory for blood processing, centrifugation, and protein purification. As a student and apprentice researcher whose specimen’s viability is of topmost priority, Wu has worked diligently around the clock from dawn to late nights without complaints. As a result, his quality research outcome was complimented by his mentor, whose praise encouraged him in his academic career: “You will achieve greatness, if you work to your fullest.”

Starting from animal proteins, Prof. Wu’s Master’s Degree brought him to a new field of plant proteins, where he has focused on exploring the anti-cancer properties of Abrin found in rosary peas (Abrus precatorius). Wu has become so deeply captivated by his research, he has even ventured into neglected cemeteries to collect rosary peas as specimens. As he progressed in his academic studies, he has obtained his PhD degree in Pathology and Neuroscience for his Post-doctorate. This passion for knowledge compelled him to study in an array of different academic disciplines, which helped to shape his expansive and broad-reaching vision.

As a developer of innovative medicine, Prof. Wu is an expert in a new generation of a targeted drug delivery system that combines phage display and liposome-based biotechnology. The system utilized phages to find tumor cells through the cells’ unique peptides or antibodies. After locating these tumor cells, the liposome carrying medicine can be guided to infiltrate cancerous cells like a cruise missile with pinpoint accuracy. This will immensely increase efficiency of the drugs with reduced side effects. The results of Prof. Wu’s research have not only been acknowledged as of substantial importance to the world, but have also ensured further progress in the cure of medical issues.

Currently, Prof. Wu has published more than 110 international journal papers in the field of biotechnology. He also holds 72 patents. Among these, 68 patents for 20 technologies have been successfully licensed to biotechnology companies, 7 technologies are undergoing clinical trials or are already on the market, and 7 patents are in the process of pre-clinical trials. These outstanding achievements have earned Prof. Wu the informal title as the “King of Technology Transfer” in Academia Sinica. In 2020, he was also elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (USA). He has also heeded the call from three generations of Academia Sinica Presidents by accepting the critical role as the Director of Biomedical Translation Research Center, Academia Sinica. In the prime of his career, Prof. Wu hopes to create a better research environment for emerging Taiwanese scientists, and lead Taiwan’s biotechnology industry into a new splendid century.

From One Generation to the Next

While Prof. Wu’s academic achievements and the number of patents has earned him much admiration, they are also reminders to his humility: “Every research is a long battle of persistence,” he said. Every joyful moment of getting acknowledged lasts only in a few days, compared to the immense amount of time in blood, sweat, and tears to achieve it. It feels especially difficult when experiments have reached a dead end in failure. But days in the laboratory—and life in general, will always have its ups and downs, just like the waves of Anping which he enjoyed watching when he was young. Always remember, he says, to “give thanks to the experience it provides” when an experiment fails, and especially always remember to maintain a humble heart when being in the spotlight. As such, Prof. Wu’s modest ethics and virtue are a direct reflection to the academic philosophy of the NCKU throughout its 90 years in education.

For his model as a teacher, Prof. Wu looks up to his mentor in NCKU, Prof. Hua-Lin Wu. He recalls vividly of how his mentor would come over to his students’ side to draw diagrams with a pen to help them overcome their learning problems. Prof. Wu’s aspiration of being a compassionate teacher is confirmed by visual evidence, as the wall of his office is adorned with dozens of group photos featuring himself with his graduated students. Prof. Wu hopes to inspire his students to become outstanding scientists, and that his future students may carry his torch. Together like runners in a relay race, generations of students may inherit the spirit of NCKU and of their mentors and shape it into a timeless virtue. As the Chinese proverb would say: “It takes ten years to grow a tree, but a hundred years to cultivate a generation of decent people.”

As an alumnus, Prof. Wu encourages his juniors to always be brave in exploring different fields when they are young. By doing this, one can acquire diversified know-how and cross-disciplinary thinking, which are crucial when they need to choose and develop their research interests in the future. “However,” he said, “’A rolling stone gathers no moss.’ – at the end of the day, one still needs to settle down to one’s passion; be persistent for your passion, and be passionate on the path you’ve chosen.” A green pasture awaits, for those who would sow deep and wide.(Image courtesy of Han-Chung Wu)
